Traditional and Modern Recruitment Methods

Most of us think, the primary work task of a company is the recruitment. The HR managers find it incredibly difficult to look for a new talent in the industry across the country in many different methods of recruitment in order to find the best possible candidates for the organization.

In the present we can observe two different types of recruitment processes which follows by the HR management, such as traditional recruitment and modern recruitment.

Local News Paper Advertisements
This has been the tradition in advertising a vacancy. And the simplest form of recruitment.

Employment agencies
Many organizations do employ through postings at employment agencies, where there are candidates looking for jobs.

Internal Hiring
Over the years most organizations have recruited through internal hiring program, through which the company often promotes employee who are already in the organization and looking for promotions.




The Power of Social Media
The most common and inexpensive method of recruiting today. It allows you to find for a potential candidate within a short period of time. Social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter can be used.

Saves Time
With the technology advance, many companies leverage Skype and video conferencing to conduct preliminary interview, which saves the time of both parties. Also monetary expenses.

Candidate in Comfortable Settings
Most companies wants the candidate to be in informal settings when evaluating the personality and knowledge and skills. The main objective is to peek into the psyche of candidate to break ice between the interviewer and interviewee which paves way for the candidate to open up and share thoughts frankly.

Conducting Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) testing
This helps the interviewer to match the personality with the job role.


In modern recruiting methods, most companies now look for employees with who are the best out of best. Since the competition is high, it is not only the qualification that matters, it is how you are suitable for the job. The applicant always has to ask the question “Am I suitable for this job? If so why?”

  1. As you have mentioned, the newer models for recruitment is much easier. And most importantly, it is effective and efficient. After all the company is depending on the employee performance. So the HR manager has to select the right person for the right job. So how can you specifically identify that?

    1. Agree, that is we call as “Employee Resourcing Strategic”, simply it means should get the right employee to run the organization in a long run. Also the employee resourcing will become strategic because, HR managers should have the recruitment strategies align with the goal of the organization, which in turn the employee will be more useful for the organization.

  2. I think as mention here there can be seen a huge difference between the traditional and modern recruitment methods. In old days basically employees were recruited through a CV or from a direct interview but nowadays employers are using more reliable methods like head hunting or man power agencies.

  3. It’s quite interesting how you have identified the difference between traditional selection and modern selection procedures. In Strategic Selection, the HR manager always focusing on highly educated and trained employees. Also most organizations are now more likely to use sophisticated techniques for recruitment and selection for all employees. So I would like to agree with you on modern selection procedures which is cost effective as well.

Such as using Social Media, mainly LinkedIn. And also the MBTI indicator which supports the HR team follow up with the recruitment process

  4. Employees are one of the biggest asset of a company as the company's success is based on their performance. Therefore, HR manager have a major task of identifying suitable talent for the company . In traditional method more attention is given to the qualifications held by the candidate which is not sufficient in today's competitive environment. So as you mentioned morden recruitment procedures give the opportunity to the HR manager to identify candidates not only well qualified but also who suit their organisation in other aspects also.

  5. Recruitment and selection considers as one of the major function in HRM. If We can solve the recruitment related issues it will reduce lots of issues. Recruitment has to be cost effective and technology driven

    1. But I think priority has to be given rather than cost effective. Because if the initial process has done well, the on going expenses can be cost effective. Also using Social Media, mainly LinkedIn can reduce the cost involve in process. And also the MBTI indicator which supports the HR team to follow up with the recruitment process.
